What was the challenge?
Hard Rock Cafe Manchester wanted to celebrate its 20th anniversary in style, but the COVID-19 pandemic meant a traditional event wasn’t possible.
A cab campaign media audit also showed that local media needed stories and campaigns that were relevant to them and the city - so the venue celebrating its birthday simply wouldn’t be enough to gain traction.
Our approach
We created Manc You For The Music, a pandemic-proof campaign to create a 20-track playlist celebrating the music of Manchester.
We pulled together a panel of city-based music experts, including Jane Beese, Head of Music at Manchester International Festival; music writer Pete Paphides; I Am Kloot drummer, Andy Hargreaves; and singer Rowetta (Happy Mondays, Todd Terry, Swedish House Mafia).
The public were also asked to make their suggestions too, via Hard Rock’s social media channels.
The panel met virtually, with the playlist revealed in the venue’s birthday week; coverage included a 30-minute discussion on BBC Radio 5 Live, hosted by one of the panel, Nihal Arthanayake.
What they said
“Collaborating with nine iconic, talented, diverse and highly opinionated music aficionados and taste makers to create a Manchester playlist was an intense and revelatory experience. Manchester’s rich musical history - past, present and future, from guitar pop to future techno - were all represented and hotly contested. I hope we’ve done our fair city true justice.”

This selection process was not easy, but we are thrilled to honour such an eclectic group of artists from Manchester and showcase the wealth of music our beloved city has produced for all of our guests and fans to hear
